Navy SEAL JP Dinnell – The Forging Of An Elite Sniper

Jeremiah JP Dinnell is a former Navy SEAL Sniper who spent nearly a decade in the SEAL Teams with three combat deployments. J.P. served as Point Man, Machine Gunner, and Lead Sniper for SEAL Team 3, Task Unit Bruiser, Delta Platoon where he worked closely with Task Unit Commander Jocko Wilink, and Leif Babin during the Battle of Ramadi, and was the driving force on many of the combat operations Jocko and Babin wrote about in Extreme Ownership, their groundbreaking book on leadership. JP was also a training instructor at Naval Special Warfare, Group One Training Detachment, where he ran Special Operations Urban Combat, and Close-Quarters Combat Training to better prepare SEAL units for the battlefield. JP is now a leadership instructor and speaker with Echelon Front, where he serves as Director of Tactical Training Programs.

In this episode of The Alpha Human Podcast, JP Dinell and Lawrence Rosenberg discuss how, from an early age the die was cast on JP’s destiny to become an elite Navy SEAL sniper, and we explore the underpinnings of his love of country, his deep-rooted belief in what makes the United States of America exceptional, and his respect for the American flag as sacrosanct in its symbolism for what he and his brothers in arms are willing to sacrifice their lives for. JP also warns of the complacency that has crept into American society and the lack of appreciation for how truly great we are as a nation, as well as where a lack of vigilance to keep evil at bay can lead.

We also talk about the unique culture of SEAL Team 3, Task Unit Bruiser, and JP’s role as Delta Platoon’s Lead Sniper and counterpart to American Sniper Chris Kyle (who was Lead Sniper for Charlie Platoon), as well as how Task Unit Bruiser’s ethos of Extreme Ownership, as driven by their leadership (Jocko WIlink, Leif Babin, and Seth Stone) empowered them to win what was said to be an unwinnable battle for the city of Ramadi, Iraq where reports had circulated that all hope was lost.

Additionally, JP talks about the Sniper Mindset, and what it’s like to command the skill necessary to execute the shots crucial to protecting lives and eliminating threats on the battlefield. He describes how he used the OODA Loop decision-making process when transitioning from instances where you have time to rehearse and plan hitting long-range targets while the enemy is unaware they are being watched, to having to react in volatile and chaotic circumstances and take quick shots with deadly accuracy.

We also explore the concept of Extreme Ownership, what it means to take on the responsibility of leadership in your personal sphere of influence as an individual, and JP’s role with Echelon Font as Director of Experiential Leadership Programs designing hands-on scenario-based leadership training where he takes corporate clients and puts them in stressful situations where they’re doing capture/kill missions against role-players so that they learn the principles of leadership, communication and the mindset of victory in real-time with actionable takeaways to be used in business.
